Just looking back over our history with Billericay and I was reminded that we once had a player called Jeff Hamlet who made about 100 appearances during the mid 80s.

How on earth was this allowed to happen and why wasn't there uproar on the terraces?

The Barmy Bog End Army » Last ever game at Walton & Hersham » 20/9/2017 10:04 am

No - didn't go to Walton!  I struggled to go there even when Tooting were playing there!  Just copied the last sentence off their message board.

As for games this season - I'm having a bit of trouble getting to games at the moment and unfortunately I will also be missing the game this Saturday as well.  Probably my next game will be Hendon away.

Its a shame about this weekend because I think our lads will raise their game for this one.  Just need to keep 11 players on the pitch!

The Barmy Bog End Army » Last ever game at Walton & Hersham » 20/9/2017 9:30 am

Slightly mixed feelings.  Never liked going there, but at the same time, the supporters seem to have been badly treated by the local council over the last decade.  And it doesn't seem as if there is to much love lost between the fans and the board.

Nevertheless, they had their final game at Stompond Lane last night and it ended up 7-0 to Walton!  And the final goal at the ground had a little bit of Tooting about it:

"A few minutes later we were treated to the goal of the game: Howard Newton crossed from the right and TJ Nkoma hit a sweet volley home with his left foot."

The Barmy Bog End Army » Naming and Shaming players » 20/9/2017 9:14 am

I'm not sure what naming and shaming a player on this message board achieves.  Its not like a player is going to see a message from me saying how he doesn't make runs to the near post, and then thinks, yeah, I'm going to start making runs to the near post!

And even if a player isn't good enough, its not his fault that he's in the team!  He's probably trying to play at the highest level possible.  Its the manager that picks him!

I suppose that an experienced player who gets sent off for, say, 2 yellows for dissent might be deserving of a bit of naming and shaming, but by and large I can't see any benefit in it.

The lads will get plenty of "advice" during the 90 minutes if they aren't playing well, and I think that's where it should stop.

The Barmy Bog End Army » Home Tonight vs Merstham » 19/9/2017 11:27 am

The Velocity Trophy is the new name for the League Cup.  I think I read on the Facebook page that it is likely to be a mix of 1st team and U23s.

They have had to cancel their first Southern Amateur League game against Old Wilsonians due to, err, some vandalism to the stand at Raynes Park.

Yes - we are long overdue a good run in the League Cup.

I think Joe is a loan keeper.  And if the red card was for hand ball, it should just be a 1 game ban, starting in 7 days. So that means he'll miss the league cup game against Merstham (unless the FA Cup game goes to a replay)

I should be working, but I found out that we started the 98/99 season much the same as this one with 3 draws and 4 defeats in the league (including a couple of hefty thrashings!).  And like this season we did get through the first qualifying round of the FA Cup.

But then Ashley Martin channelled his Harry Kane and scored 5 goals as we reeled off 4 wins on the bounce.

We ended the season in 8th.

Didin't go but we were 3-0 down when when Tupper was sent off although we managed to pull one back.  Funnily eneough I was having a conversation on Saturday about who would go in goal should this sort of thing happen.  The smart money was on SPB!.

But without being disrespectfull to Burgess Hill, Needham Market and Brightlingsea, I think these teams will end up in the bottom half of the table so if we can't pick up wins against these sides, you have to start to wonder where we will get 3 points.  7 games in and pretty soon we can stop using the "unlucky" adjective to describe our performances.

I fully expected the games to be a lot tighter this season - perhaps hinging on a single decisive moment.  But we need to start getting over the line by hook or by crook.  I still think we have the players to start climbing the table, but the manager has got to really earn his corn now.

I never really thought of him as a defender - I always looked at him as a winger.

Tom Jelley turned out for Carshalton at the weekend.  What a decent signing for a Bostik South club.

I saw that their FA Vase game was awarded to Hollands & Blair by walkover.  I checked the league website and the league table just shows them having played 1 game - and that was 3 points awarded to the opposition.

And the website doesn't seem to have been updated for some time...

The Barmy Bog End Army » Tooting 1 Needham Market 1 » 10/9/2017 5:39 pm

Thought we were a bit unlucky yesterday.  I thought we were pretty good in central midfield and won our fair share of 50/50s. And we attacked through the middle and on both flanks. But we struggled a bit to test the goalie too much. We had plenty of efforts from distance but we're finding that defenders are half a yard quicker in this division and are getting the blocks in.

But there was plenty to be optimistic about so even if we don't mount a play off challenge we should be competitive in most games as long as we keep eleven players on the pitch.

Its neither an easy home game nor an interesting away venue.  Just a difficult away game at a regular opponent.

According to the Isthmian site we have signed him

Would be an excellent signing.  But, a bit like when Matt Drage became available, there will be a lot of interest in him.

One thing that might be in our favour is that he seems to want to play in our division, so that would narrow his options a little bit.  And I think he lives in the Kingston area, so presumably travel considerations would rule out the North London sides and the Essex sides.  And Kent is a bit far as well!

See - I've virtually signed him up!

Welcome to the forum Ben.  I think a lot of the players are guilty of taken a bit too long to decide what to do.  But I think that side of things will improve as we get used to the pace of the Premier Division.  And in addition, you have to have the players that are not on the ball making themselves available a split second earlier as well.

And we're pencilled in to face Merstham in the league cup on 5th September! (according to the Isthmian Website)

Well I was happy with the overall performance today. We were competitive throughout and we defended well when we had to and attacked well when we had the chance. Plenty to work on though. We have to think a bit quicker in midfield as we just aren't going to get much time this season.

We are going to see a lot of games like this where neither side will dominate for 90 minutes - we just have to make sure that we score when we're on top but hang in there when we're under the cosh.

I didn't see the Staines game but I'm happy with the performances so  far.  But at the same time I'd like to see a slow improvement over the next couple of months.

He picked up a yellow early on so it may have been 2 bookings.
