Walking Football

This is the latest phenomenon taking off amongst the more senior of us and those who are less able to stand up to the physical demands of the traditional version of the beautiful game. Essentially it is played to the standard rules of the 5/6/7 a side version of the game with one major exception - it is played at walking pace with indirect free kicks awarded against any player that breaks into a run,  trot or jog whilst the ball is in play.

If we can get sufficient numbers interested we are thinking of starting up some regular one hour, evening sssions on the 3G pitches at the KNK stadium under the Tooting & Mitcham Utd "banner". Whilst it would primarily be aimed at people who are 50+ we would not turn away younger participants who wants  to get involved. There would be an initial registration cost of around £35/£40 to cover the cost of playing kit and equipment (excluding foot wear) with each hourly session costing £4-£5 per person depending on numbers.

If you are someone ( or  indeed if you know someone) that has played the game in the  past but no longer feel able to stand up to the physical demands of the traditional version, or indeed if you would like to take part for the first time - at a pace more suited to the ageing gentleman, then please let me know either by responding to this post or sending me a PM. As a guideline we are looking primarily for those 50+ (although would not discourage younger participants) and there is no upper age limit!

My only word of caution is that there would be no medical support on hand so if you would like to take part but are in any doubt at all as to whether you would be able, then please consult your GP first!

So I will pass thanks.
But a great initiative.  Well done Tim.

Re: Walking Football

I've seen a few clubs at our level starting up this sport.  I can't quite visualise it.  But it does seem to be taking off - so good luck.  Unfortunately I still play running football - but maybe in the future.

Re: Walking Football

Thanks Tim
I was entranced by your 'For those who couldn't visualise it', and I wanted to. So  I went to the link you sent and saw a brilliant version of Johnny B Good by Jimi Hendrix. Grateful  Tim. Thanx
But in terms of the walking football could you get a team out here to play in Dubai? If not do you know anything about crawling football? I might be ok at that

Re: Walking Football

That's one of the things I admire about Harry, always succinct, spares you all the details.

Thank you to those of you that have responded so far or sent me a PM. Still looking for another 6-8 people to make this a goer. Anyone else?

Re: Walking Football

A free taster session might help drum up some more interest.

Re: Walking Football

Good idea Tartan Terror. We couldn't do it completely free however we could certainly run a taster session (no registration fee) if people were interested at £4/£5 for the hour
