Deja - Vu

After eleven league games last season we had the same points tally 15
last season = won 4 lost = 4 drew = 3

this season = won 5 lost = 6 drew = 0

Personally I know which season I preferred, and more importantly the type of football we played, even when we lost, you could still leave the ground feeling you had been entertained, yes you were disappointed, but not in the same way as you do now, where you are thoroughly dejected, and more importantly you can not sense any imminent improvement.
I know that overall attendances at this level are down, but what hope have those people got who are trying to sell our club to the locals when , if they do venture down I can guarantee they will not return.
I am not knocking the management as I am sure they are doing their best, but I feel it is time they looked at the style of football we are playing, admit it is not working, and change, by that I mean play to feet, not hoofing it into the night sky.
It takes a big man to admit when he is wrong, but he will be better thought of if he does.
Let us hope tomorrow sees the start of a more positive feel about Imperial Fields because it is beginning to feel like a mortuary at present.

Re: Deja - Vu

Alan an excellent post but if we are honest it wont matter one bit . We played great football that followed the excellent acadamy work but all people wanted from a certain part of the main stand was direct football. People say its a results game but when you are trying to following a style of play to compliment the acadamy you are not always going to get the results. Should have at least stuck with developing a storng football ethos . That group of fans didnt get the directness they wanted and as they had the untrained ear of Steve Adkins (business man yes football man not a scooby) out went Tanner and Moriarty.
Fans deserve better

Re: Deja - Vu

It is a results game.  So what all the Tanner fans are saying is that so long as the football is pretty they don't mind if out league position gets worse year after year or even relegation?  Other teams found it easy to break down his style of play which is why the second season was worse that the first.  Don't get me wrong, I liked by-and-;large the style of play when it worked, but it did not work on consistant basis.  I don't want Tooting to be lodged in mid-table mediocrity season after season: I want us to challenge at the top.

Craig's big failier was that he would not change tactics when matches were going wrong in front of his eyes (and ours).  The short corner tactic, which if I am right, did not produce a single goal, is a great example of this.  It was not until we were well into his second season that the utterly useless tactic was eased with some long corners.

What we actually need is a style of play halfway inbetween Craig's tactics and Frank's tactics and then, maybe, we might be able to achieve sometheing.

Re: Deja - Vu

I understand and accept we, as fans, all have different opinions as to what we want from our football on a Saturday, I agree Craig was slow to change tactics but what we must remember is, this was his first attempt, and he was only in his second season,if you look at it another way, he was serving his apprentiship and learning on the job, a difficult thing to have to do, espcially with us critical buggers all watching.
My argument will always be, why take on the man in the first place, especially if you know he is a rookie, if you are not going to give him the time he needs, to do the job.
In any other walk of life a promotion is earned on past results and you have a right to expect more, but don`t throw somebody in at the deep end and expect him to swim straight away.
I have a great deal of respect for Steve Adkins, and the way he is building "Imperial Fields" but I will say it again, we have a man in Billy Smith who has forgotten more than any of us will ever know regarding football, for goodness sake, get him on board to help choose a suitable manager, then hopefully we can return to where we all want to be.

Re: Deja - Vu

I wasn't a great Craig Tanner fan, our mistake has been to appoint a manager with even less Ryman League experience than him. Our style of football last season could easily have seen us relegated, we hardly won a game from November to  March/April and some of the football in that period was dire. If it wasn't for Summers goals it could have been a disaster.
I,m not bothered what style of play we have as long as it brings results, good teams should be able to mix it up anyway, to suit game conditions.
Probably too early to judge Frank yet, he may come up with a formula to see us scrape into the play offs although at the moment that seems unlikely.

Re: Deja - Vu

Andy Mc, I wasnt a great fan of Tanner either and yes we have appointed a manager with less experence alongside an excellent coach ....but who has a recent worse track record than Tanner . All i would say is there was a vision for the club and the football we played (which was great at times and dire on occassions) at least allowed the club to build through the acadamy . Yes a good manager should be able to mix it up, even an apprentice one, but if I remember rightly we lost Smith our keeper in October when we were in the play offs and perhaps the inexperiece that Alan refers to played a part here.
In previous posts I have said give Frank a chance I still say that. But Adkins approach is knee jerk and confusing for us fans . He says on the one hand he trying to build a community inside and outside the club but
1)the football being played isnt good to watch and therefore wont encourage more people from the community to attend and
2) for the club it doesnt encourage the acadamy boys to step up as Tanner and Moriarty promoted and Adkins preached.
I say have the courage to make sure Frank is given at least 3 seasons to acheive we need stability...
but I will predict here that there will be a change within that time. But it will keep this excellent forum going.
Final note i bet the current management team are praying for rain that way they wont need an excuse for the long ball game .

Re: Deja - Vu

If you take a look at the teams we had played last season too the teams we have so far played this season then won 4 lost 4 drawn 3 was except able.
All the teams we have played so far with maybe the exception of Carshalton should have been at least a draw at worst, instead we have lost to six of these sides, some badly.
Is it really acceptable to have already lost six games before October to average teams or is it that we are not as good as we think we are,
