Record Low??????

Last night's declared attendance of 64 must be the lowest ever for a home  first team game since the club changed its name in 1932.  There were as many goals as there were spectators!.

Re: Record Low??????

Yes - very poor.  I will never understand why around 100 Tooting supporters just didn't turn up last night.  I know the results have been poor this season but if it was a league game, I bet there would have been 150 or more there.

Why don't people support the county cups?

Re: Record Low??????

Not many fans remember, or care, which teams win these tin pot cups. They're mickey mouse competitions that clubs don't take seriously. Once even one team treats it as a side show then its not worth winning.
At all levels of football, your league position determines your status in the game, so increasingly, cup competitions take 2nd place to league games. Fans are aware of this, so stay away

Re: Record Low??????

Yes, that is probably why.  But I don't agree with the reasoning.  Its a 1st team fixture and there's a cup at the end of it.  And who hasn't enjoyed our recent cup finals, even in defeat.  And particularly under Frank Wilson, who has been putting out more or less his best XI. So I consider them genuine 1st team fixtures.

There's a bit of the modern professional disease seeping down to non league here.  I think Allardyce was the 1st manager to blatantly put out a weakened team for cup games and now they nearly all do it.  Even in the early rounds of the FA Cup.  And they treat the league position as the be all and end all of the season.  We all know that 4th place for Arsenal every year is considered success.

I think cups are important as well.  Surely that is the raison d'etre of a football club - to win stuff!

Re: Record Low??????

The reason teams treat the league as the number one priority is money. The higher up the table they finish the more prize money they receive and to survive relegation is worth tens of millions.
In the ryman league I don't think this applies though.

Re: Record Low??????

We're not talking about the Premier League here, so the FA Cup apart, money is less important. I wouldn't want to win any competition, if all we played were weak teams along the way .The league is a proper competition, no room for passengers, 2nd rate players/ managers, or losers. Doing well in the league produces a greater sense of achievement and a real gauge of where you are as a club. I'm in the Arsenal camp here, I'd swap a promotion place for cup "success" any day.

Re: Record Low??????

Personally I do not mind if we win a cup playing a weakend team or if indeed if we put out a weakend team, winning a cup, or indeed taking part, is what football is all about, and last season under Craig at the Met Police, was certainly a highlight of the season and I defy anyone who was there to say they did not enjoy it.
No, I love every cup competition, and like to see success in any cup, or indeed game, that the team play.

Mike....my records show that in the last 4 seasons there have been 3 crowds lower than the 64 that attended on Tues. Two in the LSC and one in the SSC...the lowest being forty odd v Thamesmead in
The LSC

Re: Record Low??????

Peter,

l stand corrected thanks for info. These figures are shocking really, very siginificant these
Record figures are in the last 4 years. How long will it be before we dip under 100 for a league game, we come very close recently.

Re: Record Low??????

I know we all discuss the falling crowds at this level of football, but one of the teams bucking this trend is our opponents today, Worthing, for those who remember, they nearly went out of business last year, and the players were playing for nothing. This season, crowds are up 62% from last season, and the team are sitting in the top end of the table, so it can be done and good luck to them.
If I was Steve Adkins I would be talking to their chairman today and finding out what they have changed.

Re: Record Low??????

Worthing 2nd in the League and with their large crowds this season and probably a decent following we should expect 250 plus today!

As or Atkins, it's  beyond commenting, Why waste your brain power!!!!!!!!!!
