An entertaining match and a decent performance from a T&M side which featured a number of fringe players. Bennett, Clements and Cunningham played well. And it was good to see Pierson back in goal after a long lay off from injury. Hamlet were just a bit bigger and stronger, especially in central defence. Our goal came from Mazzone, who seized on a slip by their keeper at the beginning of the second half.
Credit to Hamlet for their set up. Much improved. A lovely pint of local craft pale ale (Canopy Beer Co) in the bar. Very possibly the best burger I have ever eaten at a football ground. And some top punk tunes on the tannoy at half time.

Dave Irons texted me to say he had the best Hot Dog ever !
Me ? I never made it. The kids are all off school for Easter and some knob goes and decides to dig a big hole in Haydons Road and put up temporary traffic lights Still, at least I didn't miss a 7-6 win.

No shame in that defeat. Some of their youngsters or fringe players just looked that bit more physical, pacey and confident than ours. But i thought we made a good account of ourselves and it felt very much like a match that was secondary in everyone's minds (them and us) - which probably reflected in the low crowd numbers too - 500 or so yesterday,
As much as they are our "enemy", you have to be impressed with the set up.
I think they missed an absolute hatful of chances, but at 2-1 we really looked like we might draw level.
I suppose the most satisfying news is that none of our players got any injuries, although I would think that a few 1st XI players might be tired come saturday...Quincy, Kevin. Assume Wedgie will make way for Tenny on Saturday. I'm almost certain Quincy will start. Be interesting to see if Kevin plays (he did a lot of midfield work last night!) or whether Dines / Robbo / Chace play a deeper midfield role again.
Ollie Bennet looked lively and the experience would have been good for him.
You also have to remember that a few players in their side have a fair amount of league football experience last night - Omar Koroma (Portsmouth, Norwich, Forest Green in National Lg), Gavin Tomlin (Brentford amongst others) so that was no poor showing from us.
A nice warm summers evening last night. Always makes games more enjoyable.

Although they were on top for long periods, I was pleased that we battled well and found a way to start hurting them. After our goal, we had our best spell for about 10 or 15 minutes where we had a few chances to equalise.
Most of the game we were pushed back so that when we did attack, we weren't getting the numbers forward that we normally do. And our wide play wasn't as effective last night. Most of our best attacks came through the middle from Cunningham and Bennett. But we never really pulled their defence around like they did to us.
But at the same time, our heads didn't drop and it was only our commitment to getting the equaliser that led to their 3rd on the break in the dying moments.

Agreed. And an excellent point about our wide play, which rather confirms what an important player Hoban is for us.
Roll on Saturday...though I have to say it is absolutely glorious at The Oval today.

So is the score, Surrey 133-0 after 31 overs at lunch.
We really ought to start up a Tooting & Mitcham branch of the Surrey Supporters Club, there's enough of us. I'll be the treasurer
