What joy football can bring

A few reminders of what supporting a successful Tooting team is like.

I was looking for the game against Greenwich Borough when Mike Dixon got the winner if anyone can post it. These times I believe will come again.

I miss us playing in Red socks. We played in red hoped socks one year. Looked so good with black and white.

Re: What joy football can bring

Of course your right Ev. I have been told I was at the game but I don't remember it as I was too young.
To listen to that Tooting crowd makes hairs on the back of my neck stand up ,very heart warming.
I remember when we would have 3 supporters coaches going to away trips.
Derek Forsett and his family. Great memories.
Hopefully we will have more memories created soon.

Re: What joy football can bring

Great memories. I went to all those cup ties. Swindon away and home, Bradford away. I think we had a war against Leatherhead that year to. Makes me want to cry where we are now.

Re: What joy football can bring

And what about this classic?  Only 2 teams beat Yeovil at their old sloping ground that season.  QPR and Tooting!

Re: What joy football can bring

Well done for showing what a great team we once were they should be made compulsory viewing for the likes of the Fat controller and his minions in the members club who have dragged us down to the level we now find ourselves.

Take away the word coaches for what’s more likely to happen in the near future…….

I hope your wrong. At least we got a manager that loves the club and has taken our relegation to heart. Let's get behind it.

Re: What joy football can bring

My first match at Sandy Lane was the in November 1956, when I went with my “Street mates” from Upper Tooting, who had dragged me along to watch the “Terrors” play in the 1st Round of the FA Cup against Bromsgrove Rovers. The impact was instant, the huge crowd, the great atmosphere, Military band playing, and a Bromsgrove fan running on the pitch 5 minutes before the kick-off to plant a huge vegetable on the centre circle (it looked like a giant turnip 0r was it Atkins or Woolley!). And then the Stripes took to the field to a huge roar, I was hooked. The next round we were drawn at home to QPR.

I used to go to every home game after that initial impact, with or without my mates. I would sit in the old wooden stand by myself, and a kindly old couple would look after me. They came from the Totterdown Estate in Tooting, and they had followed the club for many, many years. They always bought me a tea and something to eat at Halftime. I gradually started going to away games getting the coach from Jack Beard’s pub at the bottom of Franciscan Road. For the more important games the supporters club would run in excess of 10 coaches or more!  There were many great games in the 50’s and 60’s, but the switching on of the floodlights in a midweek match against a strong Arsenal team, was a wonderful occasion. The atmosphere was electric (No Pun intended) to see the ground bathed in floodlights for the first time was a magical effect. And of course, the greatest centre forward (striker) ever to play for the club, and the original Terror Paddy Hasty, made a guest appearance from his new club Aldershot Town.

Just look at the state of affairs now shameful!

Re: What joy football can bring

How about this one?  Probably my favourite game that didn't end up in a victory.

Re: What joy football can bring

Big Vernon scoring two. It was worth raising all that money for his knee for pay back for that night. What are you doing to me Roger ? I am actually feeling emotional.
I really hope we get a new owner who enjoys these nights as much as us one day.
If only Jamie could use this video when he pitches for a senior player for us.
Great work again Roger. Great to see you enjoying this thread.
Look at that Tooting crowd. I remember them cooking really nice pizza. The ground being all concrete except the pitch. My favourite Non-league ground.
