So 5th place Horley Town get promoted: seven points behind Tooting and nine points behind Tadley Calleva. I have never been in favour of play-offs, where, in the past, teams with far greater points deficits have been promoted over a team which thoroughly out performed them over the league season. To me a league is a league and not a knockout completion.
Good luck to Horley next season. They are promoted fairly and squarely under this system.
And my sympathies to Tadley who were clearly the better team over the 38 game season.

That is the argument against the playoff system, its not fair. We understand the reasons we have it, but when the 5th place team goes up, it underlines the unfairness of it. I would add, though, that if we have playoffs for promotion, then we should have playoffs for relegation. If its not fair at the top of the division, then it might as well be not fair at the other end of the table.
The playoff final sounds a cracking game, and a crowd of nearly 1200 !

If I remember rightly Andy, there was a case (I cannot remember when) when a sixth placed club was promoted over a third place club that had 15+ more points gained during the season.

Probably been many examples of that of the years. Ideally, you'd want 5 or 6 teams all competing for 2 promotion spots until the last game of the season, but thats rarely going to happen, so we,re stuck with the system we've got.
