Matte had in most peoples eyes an indifferent game yesterday.
It might be an idea to give him a rest to rebuild his confidence, but have we anyone to replace him?.

Yes he, like other keepers or indeed players, can make a mistake leading to a goal, but compare that to the two one on one`s where he more than atoned for his error, and the countless other times when he has come to our rescue, no I am quite happy for Matte to be our no.1 so far this season I can not think of another keeper who I would prefer.

Ok Alan I appreciate your opinion but we should have an experienced keeper in reserve in case of injury and I am not sure we have one.

Hi Gob (sorry!) - I too am a Gob.
However, it is very difficult to have a decent reserve keeper at our level. As you know, there is every chance that a reserve keeper won't get a game all season. And if you're half decent you just aren't going to accept that. A couple of years ago we had Harvey Cheadle on the bench all season and he only started a couple of games. But he is obviously willing to accept that role.
I think we just have to hope that our U21 keeper is up to the job should Matte get injured. Its halfway through the season and I don't see any reason why we shouldn't see out the season with him at least.
I think people forget that he has only just turned 20 which is incredibly young for a goalie. So presumably he will only get better. I suppose he has made a couple of mistakes, but he doesn't look like a deer in the headlights like some of our young keepers over the years.
And of course, every time I say he's made some mistakes, I should also add that he has made a lot of important stops at key moments in a lot of games.

We were spoilt a few years back when we had Darren Behcet as No.1 and Nic Taylor as his back up.
Personally I like Matte in goal, yes, he's dropped a couple of clangers but he's bailed us out on countless occasions this season. Look at the West Ham goalie (Randolph) yesterday, dropped an absolutely routine catch for Liverpool's equaliser and later made the best save I've seen all season to deny Henderson, breathtaking tip over the bar, outstanding stop, and yet at the end of the game he had his head covered because he obviously felt he'd cost his side 2 points with his howler. That's the nature of being a keeper, your mistakes invariably cost your side a goal.

I'm also more than happy for Matte to continue. Unfortunately goalkeeping errors are usually more costly than outfield ones. His positives far outweigh his negatives and he will get better with age and experience.

It would appear that the majority of people on here (myself included) are happy to see Matte between the sticks (another assured performance and clean sheet last night). For those that aren't (and their more than entitled to their opinion) be careful what you wish for.....our first goal by Mike Dixon last night was fired goalwards from an impossibly acute angle straight at their goalie on the near post, it went through his fingers, arms, thighs, knees, ankles, feet, and squirmed over the line by a couple of inches. One for a Danny Baker 'Football Bloopers' DVD.
I should mention Pierson's save near the end when he dived full length to his left to fingertip a rifled daisycutter round the post....first class.......(first class save I mean, not first class post).

Probably more important was his save in the 1st half when it was 0-0. He is actually very good in the 1-on-1 situation. Its just those long range free kicks.....
