Casuals Creeping Up

The "Corinthian" version that is.

They managed to stuff Greenwich Borough (Billy Who ? and all) by 2 - 0 at King Georges Fields in front of - wait for it - 412 odd !! (according to the Football Web Pages site) while we could only amass 168 hardy souls.

Wow - did they give free tickets away in Kingston for this match then ? Where did they get all those men and all those dogs from then ?

Makes our Jan 2nd match have more than just a little meaning doesn't it ? (Thinks - gonna need a few more programmes)

I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left !

Depending upon the receipts 59er.
When clubs try this approach, I can not remember many , if any, rushing to try it again.

Re: Casuals Creeping Up

Sadly, if we'd have done that last Saturday for arguments sake, I don't think it would have worked (the chance of savouring a great programme aside of course ).

I doubt that too many would have returned after that performance.

Not quiet but they had a Christmas fair run by the youth teams and were giving free admission on the day. Something Tooting could do ?????

Re: Casuals Creeping Up

This will always be an emotive subject among us, but we will never have stats to prove whether it works or not.
On the children side I have said for a long time, give away some season tickets to local schools for a season or two, keep track of how it works, and if successful, then the answer is obvious.
But unfortunately it probably will not happen, and I dread to think what the average age of our supporters is, is certainly does not appear to be getting younger.
Before anybody says it, I will, I am certainly helping to keep the figure high.

Re: Casuals Creeping Up

To be fair the club has in the past contacted local schools to give out free tickets but some schools have rules that do not allow this to happen. But the club does have a number of kids teams that can easily be given tickets.

Re: Casuals Creeping Up

It is a real shame that that none of the TMU Kickers teams come along to the 1st team games, all those potential supporters on our own doorstep !!

Re: Casuals Creeping Up

Hello all - am a recent convert to Tooting, having finally shifted focus to non-league properly, after a good few years of casual interest,

I have wondered about the gates issue at the club, mainly because of the success of other local clubs. Obviously Sutton and Bromley play at a much higher level at the moment, and Dulwich have the whole hipster/trendy metropolitan thing going on.

One thing I've noticed as a newcomer to the club is that the social media presence isn't all that strong at the moment. I'm not sure how much of a part it has to play in attracting new fans, but I suspect it can have a big impact in this day and age.

Physical flyers put about the local areas are probably good as well. Lewes do a great job of theirs and they seem to have pretty decent gates, Although I suppose they don't have to compete with so many other teams.

Anyway I know these won't be new ideas to anyone, and I wouldn't seek to preach to people involved with the club who produce the websites, flyers, etc as they will all know the ins and outs far better than me. But just an observation really.

Hello Mate,

Glad you've joined us... We do have a number of Twitter feeds and posters who put stuff out and also a couple of Facebook pages along with a couple of links with local news groups.

@OfficialTmufc
@RogerRamone
@hackbridgeharry
@DeepeeTerror
@TootingPRSS

All the above found on Twitter

On Facebook.

Please follow and spread the word.....

On another note... We gave out loads of Tickets to Anthony's School with not much success and also tickets were passed on to all the TM Kickers teams which did ok.
The truth is not only are we up against winning over kids who would rather sit at home on their Xbox than come to games plus there are so many other Non League clubs close to us....
Success  on the pitch brings people in more than anything else....

Re: Casuals Creeping Up

Thank you mate, appreciated. Agreed of course, ultimately succes on the pitch is the main cause of bigger crowds.

Re: Casuals Creeping Up

I've asked 1 or 2 clubs that have tried the pay what you want method what the average was, I think it was around a fiver, so we would have to double the crowd to gain our normal matchday turnstile receipts. If properly advertised this could be easily achieved, plus you've got the added bar and food income.
I'm sure all this has been suggested to Steve Adkins in the past, maybe as a businessman its not in his character to take, what he might consider to be, a financial risk.

When clubs have tried this it does generally seem to work. I think part of the success lies in its novelty value. if you did it every other month it would lose that novelty and it would not work any more. As a very occasional promotional tool I think its got a good track record at other clubs and well worth a try.
